Polishing the image of abandoned theme parks

Artist taps into faded memories to provide a dreamlike perspective of dilapidated and forgotten entertainment centers, Yang Feiyue reports.

Like the towering plumes of water at the end of a log flume ride, the nostalgia crashes over you like a wave as soon as you step into the Times Paradise exhibition, being held at Beijing’s 798 Art Zone.

Photographs featuring scenes of amusement parks located across the country, from different time periods and in varying states of repair, will send visitors whizzing down memory lane and back to the carefree days of their childhood.

Roller coasters, Ferris wheels, feats of human skill and wild animal exhibits are the major elements of the photography display.

They are the result of more than three years of painstaking effort by Zhou Chengzhou, a film director and photographic artist, originally from Central China’s Hunan province. （Excerpts from China Daily）

Plot:

This residential area in the Haidian District of Beijing called Guajia Tun, with a history of over 600 years, was demolished in the midst of the rapid development of the times. It is the place where an ancient Chinese general, Yang Liulang, dismounted his armour and prepared for battle. This is also the origin of the village’s name. In its place, apart from its history, it may be more modern, more fit contemporary aesthetics and more in keeping with its current location. Storyline

The number of women choosing to live independently in China has increased significantly in recent years, reflecting the changing social dynamics and evolving gender roles. Rapid urbanisation and rapid economic development in China have contributed to a shift in gender roles, leading to an increase in the number of women living alone. Living alone also represents a form of empowerment and autonomy.

This film tells the stories of eleven ordinary women living alone, from different parts of China, with different personalities and different cultural identities, filmed before the end of the epidemic in China (before November 2022), each of whom also participated in the film as co-writers, telling their own stories in their own languages.

They are like beautiful irises blooming in the land of China.
